Become a Volunteer

OMC values volunteers whose primary motivation is to help the greater community peacefully resolve conflict, who can commit to the volunteer service requirements, who possess the necessary skills to act as third party neutrals, and whose mediation philosophy is compatible with that of OMC’s mission and vision.

Please see volunteer mediator application below for necessary qualifications.

Individuals interested in being considered for OMC’s volunteer mediator roster should complete the Volunteer Mediator Application and submit it for processing. OMC will assess each application and contact the applicant for a face-to-face interview to discuss interest and service requirements. Once approved, individuals will be scheduled to complete a 10-hour internship consisting of observation and/or co-mediation of cases. Upon completion of the internship, OMC staff will determine whether or not individuals will be placed on its roster. Individuals who have not completed a 40-hour Mediator Training through the Oakland Mediation Center will be charged a $150 fee for the internship.

OMC is mandated to conduct a criminal background check on any individual mediating or observing cases.

For questions, please contact Volunteer Services at (248) 338-4280 x 211.

Community Mediator Volunteers:

Are you a great listener?  Does everyone call you when they need someone to listen AND not judge them?  Do you want to help others feel empowered to find the answer that is right for them?  Are you looking to make a difference in your community?  If you answered yes to any of these questions then you just might be one of the superheroes we are looking for.  We will provide the training and you will need to provide the time and commitment.

The training referenced above is the Michigan State Court Administrator Office's (SCAO) approved 40-hour General Civil Mediator Training.  The training will be held on June 4th, June 5th, June 11th, June 12th and June 13th.  Attendance at all five (5) classes is mandatory and not all individuals that apply will be accepted due to the limited seating and high-demand.  Do not delay and apply now or risk missing out on this incredible opportunity.
